Personal:

I'm a happily married guy with a 5 year old son. I started running on February 1st, 2010 with the goal of completing a triathlon (my one and only "official" race prior to that was the "Centerville half mile fun run" when I was about 8) In that following year I lost nearly 50 lbs, completed the triathlon, numerous 5Ks, 10Ks, bike races, and really started to lean towards running over the other two (though I still cross train with both).

I grew up hiking and riding horses in the mountains, so I've been drawn to take my running to the trails - and haven't looked back! I run them every chance I get, which is about 90% of the time!

Lunchtime run with Jun. Both of us ran on the roads yesterday, and therefore didn't really want to do that again for a while. Decided that with all the snow, most trails would be pretty nasty, but thought we'd give Dimple Dell a try, as it's usually pretty mild. We were pretty much wrong. 5 miles slogging up through heavy, wet, deep snow. At least we could run the whole time, however slow and slippery. Got to the top and decided to run the road back. So much for avoiding pavement. Cruiser down, hips started getting a little tight from the fast run yesterday and lifting through the snow today. I figure at least its a good training run! :)

 10 miles -  1:31:27 - 9:08 pace - 731 vert

P.S. - I think 300 miles is about the limit for the NB MT 101s. I was hoping that they'd last through to the Buffalo run, but they're pretty hammered. The small holes on the outside edge would explain the excess dirt getting in and causing a pinky toe blister on Saturdays run.

Excellent pace for a sloggy run in the snow. Man, I really hate buying new shoes - don't get me wrong, I love new shoes, just hate paying for them. Wish I was fast enough for a sponsorship :)

300 miles??? I hope they were cheap. I think I am going to do the Buffalo run barefoot. ;o)

Nice job this week. The roads are not that bad!!!

Kelli, we had a small hook-up. Yeah, they were cheap, like less than $50 cheap. If you can find a good deal on them you will actually get your moneys worth, for sure.

I guess that is worth it, then. Especially if they are comfy. My trail shoes suck. I need new ones. Where should I go?

From jun on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 11:02:12 from 66.239.250.209

Go to Wasatch Running, for sure. They have the largest selection of trail running shoes and can make sure you get in the right kind.

Do not put on or buy a pair of trail runners that are 'stability'. That's like a trail running oxymoron.

From Kelli on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 12:29:07 from 71.219.97.85

Are you mocking me? Is that what kind of shoe I have? I just looked one pair up---they are support shoes. What is that? They are actually not a dedicated trail shoe, they are intended for road and light trails. See, I am not a dedicated trail runner....YET. My other pair is a neutral shoe and those are the ones I was planning on wearing, but I keep getting blisters in weird places. What to do...

NOW WAIT, I must be a dedicated trail runner--I have TWO pairs of trail shoes (well, 1.5 anyway).

I am glad I found this. Is that my problem? I just bought my first trail shoes and they are "stability" and I feel AWFUL in them. They felt comfortable at the store. I am bummed cause' I can't keep forking out money for shoes left and right. Why is stability bad? Is it because you can't "feel" the trail? That would be my guess. I felt like I was in an armor suit, the midsole doesn't give at all. Kelli- I have seen some cool ones in the runner's world this month, in the ads-- one ad showed "Merrell Barefoot trail shoes" I have no idea but they look less bulky then the ones I picked up. This is not good-- two weeks and I don't have shoes....

I want these just because they are COOL!!!! What do you think? I could have them in two business days....

OK ladies, so here's the skinny on trail shoes. Unfortunately, many companies (like Saucony) don't really have a trail shoe. What they have is a road shoe with a stiffer midsole and beefier tread. Avoiding injury on trails (now, a lot of this is my opinion, but you'll find others who support it) is about having a lower profile to the ground to avoid ankle rolling and the softness and comfort to support your foot as it passes over rocks. Having a rock plate is ideal as it will protect your foot from sharp, pointy rocks.

There are several companies who really specialize in trail shoes. Leading the pack (I believe) is Brooks with the Cascadia 6. It is near perfection for anyone who wants to transition from roads to trails. And ladies, their girlie line is freaking sweet looking (see them in a store, not on your computer screen). Other great shoes are the Montrail Rockridge, La Sportiva Wildcat, and any of the Inov-8 line. If you have the patience, I would really suggest getting the Altra Lone Peak (altrarunning.com).

Unless you are a seasoned trail and minimalist runner I would avoid the new line of flat trail runners like the NB Trail Minimus and Merrill Trail Glove.

Thanks!!!! I just got back from the Runners' Corner. I exchanged my shoes and got Brooks Cascadia--- and lo and behold you posted those as the best. I am sooooo happy now. They feel and run great, so far!!! and I got the cheap rate cause I got the sweet color!!! it now comes in brown, I got the grey and pink, totally sweet!!

From Dorsimus on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 14:54:45 from 66.239.250.209

Ha ha, Jun and I were just at Wasatch and I came back with the Cascadias as well! :)

From jun on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 14:55:29 from 66.239.250.209

Let it be known that I am not a complete idiot. Glad you like them Julie. You'll love them on trails.

From Kelli on Thu, Mar 10, 2011 at 19:52:50 from 71.219.97.85

No wonder my trail shoes suck, they are NOT trail shoes!!!!! I did notice that my website (I always get my shoes there-I get 15% off) said that Cascadia was the BEST shoe. But darn, I loved the pink and orange ones! It is all about the look.
